يتم توصيل وحدات توسعة الإدخال/الإخراج بوحدات النظام باستخدام كابلات 12X وكابلات SPCN. يمكن لكابلات 12X نقل معلومات البيانات والتحكم. أما كابلات SPCN فلا يمكنها نقل سوى معلومات التحكم.
يتم توصيل كابلات 12X الخاصة بوحدة توسعة الإدخال/الإخراج بزوج توصيل من كابلات 12X في وحدة النظام. يوجد زوج توصيل 12X على بطاقة تركيب داخل وحدة النظام أو يتم تثبيته مباشرةً على هيكل وحدة النظام. وفي كلتا الحالتين، تكون التوصيلات موصولة بشريحة موزّع الإدخال/الإخراج التي تدير بروتوكول 12X. وتُعرف بطاقات التركيب باسم محولات GX أو بطاقات GX.
