A frequency converter is a power converter that generates a variable-frequency and variable-voltage AC supply from a fixed-frequency AC source for direct supply to electric machines such as three-phase motors. The setpoints for the frequency and amplitude of the output AC voltage are determined by the requirements of the electric machine and its current load. Some frequency converters have additional sensor inputs to detect the status parameters of the electric machine, such as speed or the current angular position of the rotor. Depending on the type of electric machine, frequency converters can operate with both single-phase AC and three-phase AC, and can also generate a three-phase AC supply from single-phase AC for powering three-phase motors.
