In gassing, a room is flooded with a toxic gas to combat pests/bacteria. Since these are toxic gases, special safety measures are required. Gassing is common in the storage of organic materials (e.g. grain storage, in port warehouses, silos, mills), as well as in churches to combat woodworm.

This is a device used for disinfecting rooms. Formaldehyde is boiled on the left hotplate and, together with condensed water (right hotplate), placed in an air stream in a room and kills all bacteria there.
