A patchpanel or patchfield is a switching field that serves for the connection, distribution and routing of connections and can thus be used for the orderly construction of complex cable structures in buildings.

Patchfields are housed in distribution cabinets and are considered passive components of a network, active components are for example switches or routers. They enable the trouble-free activation of communication services at a workplace by simply plugging in patch cables, without having to change the wiring.
