A more modern mechanical variant is the microliter or piston-stroke pipette (KHP), developed in 1957 by Heinrich Schnitger, also known as a micropipette. This pipette dispenses small volumes from 0.1 µl to 5000 µl more accurately than conventional glass pipettes. Piston-stroke pipettes work on the displacement principle: a movable piston displaces the air column beneath it when pressed down, or draws the air column upward during the upward movement, thereby also drawing the liquid to be pipetted into the attached pipette tip. This pipette tip is a disposable plastic item; only it comes into contact with the liquid.
